Talking with Tim and Sky
I spent some time talking with Tim Parr and Sky Yaeger of Swobo about their new line of bikes. I really like what they have to say and what they’re trying to do. Being careful not to trash the rest of the industry, they make their thoughts known on where they believe a big mistake is being made.
Bikes are transportation and should be a form of self expression. This is something that can’t be easily found in an industry where bikes are created for more and more niche uses and every downtube, rim and post has a different name and logo on it. Their goal is to build a bike that is clean, cool and useful and put that bike in the hands of people that will use it get to work, the bar or a buddies house.
In fact, Sky is shying away form the word “commuting”. Although that technically means just getting where you’re going, it has the connotation of going to work. They want bikes to be used for more.
So is it an “urban” bike? A bike “to get around on”? Or is this me just trying to find a pigeon hole to put it into?
Not sure, but the Swobo bikes are cool and not overly expensive. If you’re looking to get a bike that can get you from point A to B and you’re not into that normal industry stuff… you should check them out.

The Otis looks interesting — but why do they top out at a 20″ frame? Their size chart shows that fitting a 6′3″ rider but I’m ~6′6″. If you get a chance, ask them…

I will drop them a note with the question, however my guess is it’s a money decision. You gotta remember they are a small clothing shop making a line of bikes… that gets expensive.
But I’ll pass the question and post the response.

I can answer that….
Tim’s correct. It’s a matter of economics. We only have a certain amount of dollars to launch this line, so we have to first introduce the “meat” of the bike sizes. As we grow, we’ll be adding bigger sizes because we’ll have the money to hold more inventory.
We will be adding a 22″ Otis this Summer (August)…so hold tight.
Good question…
